Saddler Springs
Saddler Springs V
You've seen from the pictures that this area is quite dry; the vegetation reflects this aridity. One part of the group drove perhaps 45 minutes in the four-wheelers across sandy, dry woodland, then got out and walked into a small cleft that gradually widened and deepened. A small stream flowed lazily through the bottom. The climate within this gorge is completely different from that surrounding it. The difference was palpable, not only because of the cooler temperature, but also because of the density and kinds of plants, and even the shades of green. What we came to was a tiny, ever-wet oasis, an island of moisture in an ocean of dry.
The other part of our group remained behind to begin preparations for our final dinner. They started with damper, a savory bread cooked in a camp oven (or dutch oven). A camp oven is a cast iron pot with lid that is buried in coals by the fire. They made a variety of loaves, including an especially good garlic and cheese version. In fact, they cooked the entire meal in the camp ovens. It was delicious, of course. Many thanks to those who stayed behind to bake the bread.
A few people finished off the afternoon by climbing the hill right behind the camp. It's quite steep, but the view is spectacular. The next morning saw us scurrying to pack our bags for the long bus ride back to Brisbane. We were all sorry to leave. Almost everyone wished to stay longer, instructors included.
Note: Thanks to Joe Starnes and James Mooney who kindly provided pictures of the trip. (I think James' camera is still set to time in the States.)
