INDOOROOPILLY ISLAND. Located in the Brisbane River, Indooroopilly Island is the roosting site of tens of thousands of flying foxes or bats. Those shown here would include the Black Flying Fox, Pteropus alceto, and the Grey-headed Flying Fox, Pteropus poliocephalus. Both are very large with bodies of 250 mm and wingspans of over one meter! In the early evening, they leave their roosts and fly over the various suburbs of Brisbane. It reminds me of the flying-monkey scence from the Wizard of Oz. These bats do not echolocate. They feed on fruit and blossoms.
