New Zealand
New Zealand
North & South Islands We spent almost three weeks on a geological field trip around New Zealand. Words don't really suffice to describe it; pictures don't either, but take a look and it'll give you the idea.
New York
New York
John Boyd Thacher State Park We spent a few days at Cortland's Brauer Field Station, just southwest of Albany; the major (geological) attraction there is a beautiful exposure of early Devonian limestones along the Indian Ladder Trail in Thacher State Park. The rocks record a deepening ocean, starting with exposed tidal flats grading to intertidal and finally fullly immersed sediments with lots of shelly fossils.
Stradbroke Island I
Stradbroke Island I
Moreton Bay Research Station An hour's ferry ride from the mainland brings you to North Stradbroke Island, a beautiful, sand-rich island marking the edge of Moreton Bay. Using UQ's research station as a base, we studied marine environments with experts from the University of Queensland.
Stradbroke Island II
Stradbroke Island II
Moreton Bay Research Station After finishing our marine biology studies, we worked to understand the fire-influenced terrestrial ecology evident on the island.
Saddler Springs
Saddler Springs
Carnarvon Gorge Area We enjoyed a special time staying at a Queensland cattle station. An eleven-hour bus ride brought us to Saddler Springs, where we were hosted by the Hancock family. We tested ourselves on a strenuous hike, enjoyed the austere beauty of the land, and visited powerful aboriginal sites.
Lady Elliot Island
Lady Elliot Island
Southern Great Barrier Reef LEI is a coral cay at the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. We reached it via small plane and spent a week snorkeling, diving and reef-walking. Students developed research projects, collected and analyzed data, then presented their results.
Lamington
Lamington National Park
Queensland / New South Wales Border Lamington lies on the rim of an ancient volcanic caldera. Its rugged topography and nature of the geology influence the development of dense, diverse forest there.
Brisbane
Brisbane
City and Day Trips Brisbane, the capitol of the State of Queensland, lies astride the Brisbane River, in the southeast corner of the state. It's a vibrant and growing city, and features a variety of popular and cultural attractions.
