NESTED QUADRATS. Our first field trip was
to North Stradbroke Island. Students spent the last few days of the trip
studying terrestrial ecosystems on the island.
Here a group of students collects data to construct a species-area
cruve for the dune system at 18 Mile Swamp on the east coast of North
Stradbroke Island. The cumulative number of plant species in a 0.25 sq. m.
quadrat were determined. The size of the quadrat was doubled ten times until
a 256 sq. m. quadrtat was reached, with the number of species at each stage
recorded. These data were plotted and then compared with the data from a
similar exercise carried out near Brown Lake, a large perched lake on the
island.
