18 Mile Swamp

Post Card From Oz

14--18 Sept 1998

From our Queensland, Australia Trip
17 July to 27 November 1998

NESTED QUADRATS. Our first field trip was to North Stradbroke Island. Students spent the last few days of the trip studying terrestrial ecosystems on the island. Here a group of students collects data to construct a species-area cruve for the dune system at 18 Mile Swamp on the east coast of North Stradbroke Island. The cumulative number of plant species in a 0.25 sq. m. quadrat were determined. The size of the quadrat was doubled ten times until a 256 sq. m. quadrtat was reached, with the number of species at each stage recorded. These data were plotted and then compared with the data from a similar exercise carried out near Brown Lake, a large perched lake on the island.
