LAB WORK. Our first field trip was to North Stradbroke Island. Students spent the first few days studying the intertidal zone and carrying out experiments there. One of the projects studied the species of small marine animals associated with the brown algae sargassum. Students collected various sized clumps of the algae and carefully indentified the amphipods, isopods, and snails associated with each clump. These data were used to determine a relation between clump size and the number of individuals associated with it for each species.
