From our Queensland, Australia Trip
17 July to 27 November 1998

THE BLUE-TONGUED LIZARD , Tiliqua scincoides, is one of the more common larger reptiles in around Brisbane. The mild winter weather has allowed them to be active somewhat sooner than normal. This one was sunning itself in a drain well of the Emmanuel College Chapel just across the parking lot from our house. During our 1996 visit, one lived in the shrubs by our front door and we often saw it sunning itself next to our steps.

If cornered, a Blue-tongued Lizard will hiss and protrude its bright blue tongue to frighten its aggressor. It is however, non-venomous, as are all Australian lizards. The Blue-tongued Lizard feeds during the day on snails, insects, fruit and flowers. It generally lives in the forests, open woodlands, and grasslands of northern and eastern Australia. It shelters in hollow logs and leaf litter.
