Baggage Storage: During this trip, space will be tight: you will be allowed a pack/duffel and a single Day pack ONLY. You'll have to store the rest of your baggage. Options:
a) Auckland International Airport. Visitor Information Centre (ph: 64, 9, 275-6467) for 7$NZ per bag per day, open 5 AM to Midnight. OR Seal and Secure (ph: 64, 9, 256-8769) (also in International terminal), for $5NZ per bag per day. Hours 5AM to 9PM starting mid November - check the time of your return so you know they'll be open when you're ready to head back to the States.
b) Christchurch International Airport. The Travel and Information Centres provide baggage storage. Domestic Terminal: 7.30am to 8.30pm. travel&info@cial.co.nz Phone: +64 3 353-7774 Fax: +64 3 353-7754 The cost varies with the size of the bag, ranging from NZ$5 to NZ$8 per bag / per day.
Christchurch
Suggested lodging in Christchurch: Please try to stay near Latimer Square. Latimer Square is centrally located near the center of the city. Suggestions:
1) Stonehurst, 241 Gloucester St., ph: 03-379 4620. www.stonehurst.co.nz. Dorm beds as low as NZ$19 pp/pn. Singles, doubles, etc. more.
2) Foley Towers, 208 Kilmore St., ph: 03-366 9720. foley.towers@backpack.co.nz Shared rooms as low as NZ$18, twins & doubles without/with bath NZ$42/48.
3) Frauenreisehaus Women's Hostel, 272 Barbadoes St., ph: 03-366 2585. Dorm beds NZ$17, singles NZ$27, twins NZ$42. Women-only hostel east of Latimer Square. "Wonderfully well-equiped", according to Lonely Planet.
4) The Old Countryhouse, 437 Gloucester St., 03-381 5504. Dorm beds from NZ$17, twins & doubles from NZ$44. A little further east, but "inside an attractively restored old home...with a warm & relaxed atmosphere". (Lonely Planet)
