The Asian Studies Research Guide (http://library.hws.edu/asian_studies) and the Art Research Guide (http://library.hws.edu/art) should be particularly useful for this project.

Interlibrary Loan:
You can place Interlibrary Loan requests for any books or articles not held by our Library at this link: https://illiad.hws.edu/. The time required to receive materials through Interlibrary Loan is usually a week to ten days. To figure out whether our Library holds a source you are interested in, look for book titles or journal titles (not article titles) at the Items in the Library link on the Library’s home page.

Databases for locating multiple types of sources:
Locate books and articles through SingleSearch, linked from the Library’s home page. Either the question mark ? or asterisk * wildcards seem to work.

You can also locate books, articles, and some archival materials through WorldCat – this library database (http://hws.worldcat.org/) lists sources held in library collections throughout the world, and the results pages indicate which materials can be found in the HWS Library. Either the question mark ? or asterisk * wildcards seem to work; you can limit by type of material (books, articles, etc.) and by language.

Databases for locating journal articles:
JSTOR provides the full text of journal articles, from the first issue of the journal through issues dating from three to five years ago (no current articles). Select “Advanced Search,” enter your search terms (wildcard is an asterisk *), and click on as many of the following disciplines that apply to your topic: Architecture & Architectural History, Art & Art History, Asian Studies, Feminist & Women’s Studies, Language & Literature, Philosophy, and Religion.

The Bibliography of Asian Studies (BAS) provides citations for western-language monographs, articles, and book chapters, published since 1971, on all parts of Asia. Click on “Advanced” for the advanced search. Enter your search terms (wildcard is an asterisk *), using “entire record” if you are trying to do a keyword search. You can e-mail a selection of citations to yourself or print out the list. After finding sources in this database, you need to check our library catalog and databases to see if they are in our collection in either print or electronic form; if not, you will need to request them through Interlibrary Loan.

Art Index with Full Text provides citations to articles in all areas of art and architecture, 1984 to present, from over 370 journals in English and other languages (Art Index Retrospective covers the same material up to 1984), and also provides full text of certain articles beginning in 1997. The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. Note that these database only indexes books on art history and articles in journals devoted to art history, not relevant art history articles published in, for example, journals devoted to Asian Studies.

Oxford Art Online “is an excellent resource for art research. Most notably, it contains the full text of the Grove Dictionary of Art, with over 45,000 articles on topics in Western and non-Western art, more than 5000 searchable art images, and over 40,000 links to images at museums around the world. Oxford Art Online also includes access to the Oxford Companion to Western Art, the Encyclopedia of Aesthetics, and the Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Terms.”

Project Muse provides the full text of journal articles from the most current issue back through the 1990s. Though it covers fewer journals than JSTOR, they are sometimes different journals and certainly they are the most recent issues of these journals, and this database also provides PDFs. The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *.
