 Goals
We will cover the beginnings of Christian Art and Architecture in the cities of Rome and Constantinople and follow the diffusion of forms into the fringes of the Mediterranean world.  The course is organized chronologically around the adaptation of classical forms for new purposes and the invention of new forms for the new religion.  Of primary concern for architecture is the interaction between use and design, typified by the development of liturgical space.  Special attention will be paid to the importance of the icon, its role in society, the subsequent politcally-driven destruction of holy images during Iconoclasm and the final restoration of the cult of the image.

Requirements
attendance and participation  -- 10%
6 quizzes    -- 30%
these quizzes will be brief slide quizzes, on Fridays,
with the exception of the first two scripture quizzes.
oral midterm exam  -- 10%
2 short papers (2-4 p)  -- 20%
final exam    -- 30%

final exam -- Sunday, June 4, 7-10 p.m.
there will be NO early exams.  NONE.  Inform your parents and make your travel plans now.
Plan to be in Houghton 212 Sunday evening. To make up for my unpleasant rigor, refreshments will be supplied.

Attendance Policy
Attendance:  of course if you don't attend you won't do very well.  Visual material will often seem very different in color and in large scale on the wall from its appearance in black and white in a small paperback book, so if you don't see both, your work will suffer.

For each class you miss you will write a three-page double-spaced typed discussion of 2 of the slides from that class day in response to the readings.  Failure to produce this work within 1 week of the absence will reduce your participation grade by 2 points.

Required Resources
L. Michael White, The Social Origins of Christian Architecture
Thomas  Mathews, The Clash of the Gods
Richard Krautheimer, Early Christian and Byzantine Architecture

recommended books
James Pierce, From Abacus to Zeus -- an exceptionally handy book for terms and background.
