From our Queensland, Australia Trip
17 July to 27 November 1998

A HIGHLIGHT OF THE trip to Saddler Springs was the time spent with Grahame Walsh (center), the world's leading expert on Aboriginal Rock Art. Grahame showed a number of slides of Aboriginal paintings from areas all over Australia, including several from the area where we were staying. In the Carnarvon region, much of the art work was done with ochre stencils. The object ot be stenciled would be placed against a cave wall and ochre that had been mixed with water would be "sprayed" over the object by spitting a fine mist from one's mouth. Grahame also provided additional background on the society, religion, and culture of the indigenous peoples of Australia.

Rock Art THIS RED OCHRE STENCIL work from the Toombs at the Mt Moffat section of Carnarvon National park shows kangaroo "hoppers" (hind legs). In the lower left, the two hands with thumbs crossed is an Aboriginal hand sign for "many." The work as a whole represented a type of "prayer" for increased food resources and success in hunting
