Background

New Zealand provides a geological diversity unmatched in such a compact area. Its geological youth also makes for spectacular scenery. We'll spend just under three weeks sampling the landscape, geology, and ecology here. You are responsible for getting to Christchurch the morning of November 19.

Storing Bags

Baggage Storage: During this trip, space will be tight: you will be allowed a pack/duffel and a single Day pack ONLY. You'll have to store the rest of your baggage. Options:

a) Auckland International Airport. Visitor Information Centre (ph: 64, 9, 275-6467) for 7$NZ per bag per day, open 5 AM to Midnight. OR Seal and Secure (also in International terminal), for $5NZ per bag ($4 for 2 wk), but hours are 5AM to 8 PM - check the time of your return.

b) Christchurch International Airport. The Travel and Information Centres provide baggage storage. Domestic Terminal: 7.30am to 8.30pm. travel&info@cial.co.nz Phone: +64 3 353-7774 Fax: +64 3 353-7754 The cost varies with the size of the bag, ranging from NZ$5 to NZ$8 per bag / per day.

Phone Calls

From overseas, all numbers can be reached by dialing 64, then a single digit area code, then the number. In New Zealand, you must use a two-digit area code (add the leading zero). You cannot call toll-free numbers from overseas, only within NZ.

Internet

We will be travelling a lot; some places will have access and others will not. Typically it's a coin-operated terminal on which you purchase access by time. So, while you'll have access sometimes, don't count on it.
