Burial Site

Australian Post Card

2 November 1998

From Mrs. Glover

This is an aboriginal burial site called The Duchess. Bodies were wrapped and put into holes like these. Then family and friends left their prints here to give or to receive special messages and feelings for their loved ones.

Rock Art This red ochre stencil work from Carnarvon National park shows kangaroo "hoppers" (hind legs). In the lower left, the two hands with thumbs crossed is an Aboriginal hand sign for "many." The work as a whole is a type of "prayer" for increased food and success in hunting
