Kookaburra

Post Card From Oz

From our Queensland, Australia Trip
17 July to 27 November 1998

WE KNEW WE WERE back in Australia the morning we heard the distinctive laughing call of the kookaburras at 4:30AM. In fact, this fellow was probably the culprit. The ones here at Emmanuel College often alight on top of the light tower on the cricket field across the street from our house and call to stake out their territory.

The Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaguineae) is the largest kingfisher. They have a loud, maniacal laughing call and are often heard in "chorus." They feed mainly on reptiles and large invertebrates. They are common in woodlands and forests in eastern Australia and are often seen in pairs. Length: 46cm.
