Note: campus-wide access to the Library’s catalog and electronic resources is through the Library home page (https://library.hws.edu/home/). Research guides: Interlibrary Loan: Databases for locating multiple types of sources: You can also locate books, articles, and some archival materials through WorldCat (under Find Materials | WorldCat)—this library database (https://hws.worldcat.org/) lists sources held in library collections throughout the world, and the results pages indicate which materials can be found in the HWS Library. Either the question mark ? or asterisk * wildcards seem to work; you can limit by type of material (books, articles, etc.) and by language. Don’t forget to check the books on reserve for this class. Databases for locating journal articles, newspaper articles, and book chapters (under Find Materials | A–Z Database List): Art Index with Full Text provides citations to articles in all areas of art and architecture, 1984 to present, from over 370 journals in English and other languages (Art Index Retrospective covers the same material up to 1984), and also provides full text of certain articles beginning in 1997. The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. Note that these databases only index books on art history and articles in journals devoted to art history, not relevant art history articles published in, for example, journals devoted to Asian Studies. Grove Art Online “is the unsurpassed authority on all aspects of the visual arts, with 30,000 signed and peer-reviewed articles contributed by nearly 7,000 international scholars. Grove Art features entries on artists, architects, craftsmen, patrons, movements, locations, and periods, as well as bibliographies for further research and thousands of searchable images made available through Oxford’s partnerships with museums, galleries, and other outstanding arts organizations. First published as the landmark 34-volume Dictionary of Art, the dictionary now lives as an online resource, published by Oxford University Press.” Project Muse provides the full text of journal articles from the most current issue back through the 1990s. Though it covers fewer journals than JSTOR, they are sometimes different journals and certainly they are the most recent issues of these journals, and this database also provides PDFs. The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. Atlantic Magazine Archive provides online coverage of material (articles, photographs, videos) from The Atlantic Monthly/The Atlantic from 1857 to 2014. The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. Historical New York Times “contains full-text articles of The New York Times dating from 1851 through approximately 2.5 years ago. For recent New York Times articles, use ProQuest Direct.” The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. Newspaper Source “provides full text coverage of a variety of national (U.S.) and international newspapers, including The Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Times (London), The Toronto Star. In addition, full text television & radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, CNN, CNN International, FOX News, and NPR.” The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. ProQuest Direct “databases include ABI/Inform, Proquest newspapers, and research library. More or less a cumulative database of newspapers, popular press magazines, and scholarly journals.” The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. |
