Tuesday, Mar. 7, 4:45–6:00pm, Houghton House 112: Speaker, Josh Franco, National Collector, Smithsonian Archives of American Art, “There was a place called America…”: Looking Back at the Archives of American Art.
In the Summer of 2020, artist Cannupa Hanska Luger was interviewed for the Archives of American Art’s Pandemic Oral History Project. When asked what he wanted to tell artists living in America in 100 years, he responded, “Well, there was a place called America. I want to start with that.” In this lecture, Josh T Franco, head of collecting at the Archives, will perform an experiment. He will place himself in this retrospective position imagined by Hanska Luger to reflect on the impulse to preserve material culture with a national frame. Through selected documents from the Archives and following an overview of the institution’s history both prior to and as part of the Smithsonian, Franco will explore the question: Why the “American” in the Archives of American Art?
