Research guides (linked from the Library’s home page):
The library research guides have suggestions for keywords and phrases and links for relevant resources. The Asian Studies Research Guide (https://library.hws.edu/asian_studies) and the Art Research Guide (https://library.hws.edu/art) should be particularly useful for this project.

Interlibrary Loan (linked from the Library’s home page):
You can place Interlibrary Loan requests for any books or articles not held by our Library at this link: https://illiad.hws.edu/. The time required to receive materials through Interlibrary Loan is usually a week to ten days. You can access this directly from the WorldCat database or the Library’s home page.

Databases for locating multiple types of sources:
Locate books and articles through Find Materials | SingleSearch (accessible from the Library’s home page). Either the question mark ? or asterisk * wildcards seem to work.

You can also locate books, articles, and some archival materials through Find Materials | WorldCat —this library database (https://hws.worldcat.org/) lists sources held in library collections throughout the world, and the results pages indicate which materials can be found in the HWS Library. Either the question mark ? or asterisk * wildcards seem to work; you can limit by type of material (books, articles, etc.) and by language.

JSTOR (under A-Z Database List, linked from the Library’s home page) provides the full text of journal articles, from the first issue of the journal through issues dating from three to five years ago (no current articles), as well as some books. Select “Advanced Search,” enter your search terms (wildcard is an asterisk *), and click on any of the following disciplines that apply to your topic: Architecture & Architectural History, Art & Art History, Asian Studies, Feminist & Women’s Studies, Language & Literature, Philosophy, and Religion.

Art Index Full Text (under A-Z Database List, linked from the Library’s home page) provides citations to articles in all areas of art and architecture, 1984 to present, from over 370 journals in English and other languages (Art Index Retrospective covers the same material up to 1984), and also provides full text of certain articles beginning in 1997. The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *. Note that these database only indexes books on art history and articles in journals devoted to art history, not relevant art history articles published in, for example, journals devoted to Asian Studies.

Grove Art Online (under A-Z Database List, linked from the Library’s home page) “is the unsurpassed authority on all aspects of the visual arts, with 30,000 signed and peer-reviewed articles contributed by nearly 7,000 international scholars. Grove Art features entries on artists, architects, craftsmen, patrons, movements, locations, and periods, as well as bibliographies for further research and thousands of searchable images made available through Oxford’s partnerships with museums, galleries, and other outstanding arts organizations. First published as the landmark 34-volume Dictionary of Art, the dictionary now lives as an online resource, published by Oxford University Press.” The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *.

Project Muse (under A-Z Database List, linked from the Library’s home page) provides the full text of journal articles from the most current issue back through the 1990s, as well as some books. Though it covers fewer journals than JSTOR, they are sometimes different journals and certainly they are the most recent issues of these journals, and this database also provides PDFs. The wildcard for searches is an asterisk *.

The Bibliography of Asian Studies (BAS) (under A-Z Database List, linked from the Library’s home page) provides citations for western-language monographs, articles, and book chapters, published since 1971, on all parts of Asia. Click on “Advanced” for the advanced search. Enter your search terms (wildcard is an asterisk *), using “entire record” if you are trying to do a keyword search. You can e-mail a selection of citations to yourself or print out the list. After finding sources in this database, you need to check our library catalog and databases to see if they are in our collection in either print or electronic form; if not, you will need to request them through Interlibrary Loan.
