ART 480
-- Art of the Pilgrimage Roads --

First Presentation:  April 13

background:

We have looked at a few examples of the built environment in terms of how their design
         is experienced
may have been intended to be experienced
and how the designer and/or patron
         conveyed
        telegraphed
         made explicit
that intention.

assignment:

Take a Geneva building, any Geneva building (almost) and prepare a 15 minute talk -- not a paper, a talk -- on how this building works.
Consider
overall disposition of spaces and arrangement of solid blocks
         usage of spaces
         decoration
         signage

It does not HAVE to be an ecclesiastical space, but it must be a public space -- e.g., the Opera House;  Scandling (a HARD one).

preparation:
you should choose a building you like
you should check for slides (use the searchable slide catalog Visual Resoruces Collection page -- http://vrcart.hws.edu/vrc/)
you should consider all the correct technical terminology you can muster to describe the building
you should find every bit of information about it you can and EVALUATE  that information..
you must come see me to discuss your presentation by or on Wednesday of next week.  Plan on at least 20 minutes to talk to me.  Bring your slides and a CLEAR  idea of an outline.  A slide sheet with the order of views already fixed will help.

points for thought:
do not write a paper and read it out loud -- choose pictures and then plan to talk about them.  Make the IMAGES primary.   This is Art History.
think about the order in which I tend to take buildings -- view, plan, sections, interiors -- thereís a reason for that.
