Cows Come Home Exhibition
March 26th through
April 16, 2004
The paintings below will
be exhibited at Houghton House Gallery on the Hobart and William
Smith Colleges campus From March 26th through April 16, 2004. The
work stems from my continuing interest in historical painting techniques,
in this case 17th century Dutch and Flemish art. Using cows as subject
matter revisits a theme I began in 1972 when my studio was located
adjacent to a pasture frequented by a herd of dairy cows. The introduction
of a television set in some of the paintings adds a postmodern twist.
Images 1 through 20 are painted in oils on canvas replicating as
nearly as possible the techniques of artists such as Rembrandt and
Vermeer. This involves building highlights with thick impastos of
lead white and layering in colors with multiple glazes. The paintings
are framed in heavy, black, wooden frames as was the custom of the
time (see scale image below). Dimensions are listed including frame.
Images 21 through 25 are completed in oil pastels on 13”x17”
sheets of heavyweight watercolor paper. These are unframed and the
dimensions reflect the actual image size.
Titles and Dimensions
Images 1-20 are oil on canvas with dimensions listed including frame.
Images 21-25 are oil pastel on paper, dimensions reflect actual
image size. All works were completed in 2002 or 2003.
