Not the Café Guerboisbut East 8th Street, a creaky
loft in the late 40s, early 50s, but a kind of fellowship was there, words given,taken, exchanged, turned over,set against each other, lifted to the light, examined, shared, becoming signs of mutuality, tokens of care. |
| We did care. The talk, the being together affirmed our effort, gave us strength "encouraged us with stores of enthusiasm so that we emerged tempered... with a firmer will,... our thoughts clearer, more distinct" Monet writing of those early meetings in the Café Guerbois, speaks not ofa search for meaning, but for seeking of what can be made, made out ofthe seen & what was remembered of it. --Hilda Morley |
