Koshare Mission Statement
Koshare ("Dancers of Sacred Ground") is a club that has
been in effect for over sixty three years. Each year we aspire to give
a concert that is organized, produced, choreographed, and danced by the
students of the Colleges. We continue to brighten the Winn-Seeley stage
with both past and new members sharing the diverse creativity each person
contributes. Together we express our thoughts, feelings, and aesthetics
through the art of movement.
It is the founding belief of this group that everyone is welcome, meaning
that people with no dance experience are as equally valued as advanced
dancers. To reiterate this belief, we make it our vow to cast everyone
who auditions, regardless of their technical performance. Being part of
such a great production also entails learning about how things work behind
the scenes of the show. For those interested in back-stage work, there
are opportunities work with lighting, sound technician, and stage managing
among other things.
For those seeking further enrichment, each Koshare member is allowed to
participate in up to three pieces. This means the avenues are open for
an individual to both create a piece and to be a part of someone else's
piece at the same time. Once again, there is no dance or choreographic
experience necessary, so that there are as few artistic limitations as
possible. Freedom of expression is highly valued, because everyone has
something inside of them that is beautiful and different from the next.
This way, we open a kind of movement dialogue where everyone can speak
their hearts and minds in the language of the dance.
It is through the uniqueness of each member and each dance that we are,
in fact, unified as a group of movers. Movement embodies the highest level
of human consciousness where intellect, spirit, and body combine, making
the dance of utmost importance in life. So please come and join us each
autumn semester!
