Tamaki Maori Village

Our first night on the North Island, we boarded a bus for Tamaki Maori Village , which offers a journey back in time to a pre-European Maori village, including a traditional and spectacular welcome ceremony. Crackling open fires in front of traditional whare (houses), the sound of ancient Maori instruments, and the activities of the people of days gone by introduce the tradional ways of Maori life. Performances of traditional and modern Maori song and dance offer some of the history and depth of the culture.

The evening was capped with a traditional Hangi feast. All meats and vegetables are cooked in the traditional fashion, beneath the ground on hot rocks. Everything was truly delicious and the good feelings and warmth were our substitute for Thanksgiving.

It's not grilled chicken salad, but a Hangi dinner's the next best thing. (I'm just kidding, Mary. :) )
