Advanced search techniques can make your research more focused and effective.  Click here for a Powerpoint guide to these important search principles.

Books:

Locate books in the HWS Library by using our catalog in the Lobby or through our Web page http://academic.hws.edu/library.

Search for water transfer as Keyword.  Locate books using the white slips at the Circulation and Reference Desks.

You can identify more books on a given subject by searching over 54 million books in Worldcat  and placing interlibrary loan requests for items you would like.  Time required is usually a week to 10 days

Scholarly Journal Databases:

For scientific coverage of the topic :

General Science Index  -  Search for particular transfers ie, Colorado River as Keyword.  Searching for water transfers will give you all articles about all transfers

GeoRef – Search for water as Subject and, in another search box input management or supply or resources.  In a third search box input a particular transfer ie, Colorado River as Keyword.

From Prof. Kinne: Additional key words I would suggest adding to "water transfer" or "inter-basin"  are: Reservoir, conflict, politics, agreement, treaty and names of states or countries (particularly arid states and countries). This should help both in georef and Lexis and any newspaper databases.

NOTE: Many of the publications found in GeoRef will require Interlibrary Loan.  See a reference librarian if you have questions about this process.

For social/political coverage of the topic :

Public Affairs Information Service, Social Science Abstracts, Lexis-Nexis (Search Legal)

Newspapers :

Lexis-Nexis – Click Power Search for US newspapers and Major World Newspapers

National Newspaper Index - Major US newspapers; citations only

Internet

Examine information from the Internet carefully before using it for research purposes.  Always be aware of who is responsible for the material, and what credentials they have for writing on the subject(s).

From Prof. Kinne: On-line, many states have water resource divisions and those are good places to look for information about water transfers in those states. (Find State Enviromental Agencies listed here)

Other key words to search on-line are basin, trans-basin, organization, agreement, non-profit, watershed, association, streamkeeper, water resources, water board, etc. This approach will help pick up water basin management non-profits or municipal bodies that are involved with policing, managing or lobbying for or against a given transfer.
