Samuel Alden

A sophomore at Hobart College, Sam Alden is from Essex Vermont. Sam is an International Relations major and Political Science minor. He is very active on the club soccer team. In fact, he has started the team. On campus, he is also involved in the Hobart Ski Team and the Model UN. This fall, he pledged Phi Sigma Kappa National Fraternity and now is a brother. Sam will be studying abroad in Copenhagen this coming fall. Sam has a younger brother Jack and sister Lucie. He also enjoys hanging out with his dog whose name is Chaz. In his free time, Sam loves to ski at Mad River and Jay Peak. He really enjoys watching Live Soccer games on TV, his favorite soccer team is Liverpool. His favorite TV show is Seinfeld and his favorite movie is Almost Heros. His favorite bands are Guster, Counting Crows, Coldplay and Graham Colton. Additionally, he has travelled all over the world. He has been to a variety of cities and his favorite is Budapest in Hungary. Last summer he interned for his state representative. Since he is from Vermont he is a huge Ben and Jerry’s fan. His favorite flavor is cinnamon bun. He currently resides in Durfee Hall.

Robert Cahill

Robert is from Farmington Hills, Michigan, and he is a junior studying Media and Society here at HWS. The main interest in his life has been hockey and he plays at HWS for the Statesmen. Playing hockey took him all across the country during high school, and he ended up going to five high schools. He also played junior hockey for two years after and therefore he is a 23 year old junior and is allowed to live off campus. When he came to HWS he was very undecided which direction his education was going to take. But when he took Intro to M&S and it was clear that he wanted to major in it. His passion within the field is for Film. It started with watching/enjoying/critiquing, and has since branched out into wanting to be somewhere on the production side. He believes that one of the strengths of a good film is the cinematography, the way it is shot and how it is composed. He took his mom’s new Sony SLR and has been teaching himself to look and take beautiful pictures. He really hopes to further his interest in photography by taking this course, as well as gaining technical and analytical knowledge.

Nora Clarke

Nora Clarke is a first year. She is from New York City and has lived there her entire life. She also enjoys spending time in Pennsylvania during the summertime, where she works at a children’s summer camp. She has taken darkroom photo at the Fashion Institute in NYC. She wants to major in Studio Art and English and minor in history possibly. In the future, she aspires to be the next Anna Wintor with a career in fashion editing. Recently, she held an internship at Infomat, a fashion website, where she attended many fashion shows. She enjoys playing tennis and is the oldest of four children. She has a yellow Labrador named Charlie and a goldfish named Mike Bernard.

Kirsten Cooper

Kirsten Cooper is a junior at Hobart and William Smith Colleges and is studying Asian Languages and Cultures major and is also an international relations and English minor. She became interested in Asian culture and international relations because her mother worked for the government and she believes knowing Chinese will help her get an interesting job. Her mother worked in the Navy so she traveled around the world and the coolest place she said she lived in was Turkey. She also wants to keep traveling all around the world when she graduates college. She currently lives in Columbia Maryland and works at Picture People studios. Kirsten is also on the Crew Team at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Kirsten studied aboard in China Fall semester. She has two cats named Merry and Pippin and is the only child.

John Delaney

John is a sophomore, a Media and Society major, and an Political Science minor. He is from Boston, MA. He is really interested in cinematography, production and film but his interest in film sparked his interest in photo. He has an older brother, a younger sister, and one dog. He was born in Maine. He runs cross country for fun and as a sport. He can speak sign language at a primitive level. He's interested in making social documentary films at some point in my life. He's broken seven bones so far; five of which are in his right foot. He took four years of Spanish in high school, but still cannot speak the language. During the summer of 2008, he was an extra in a movie called Surrogates with Bruce Willis. He also worked environmental advocacy agency doing mostly canvassing. He enjoys alternative/indie rock music; State Radio and Fleet Foxes. He plays the fiddle; mostly Irish music. Things he doesn't generally enjoy are: drying off with a wet towel, seaweed when it wraps around your leg, and condescending people. His favorite TV show is Macgyver.

Gretchen Devine

Gretchen is a freshman at William Smith College who is originally from Granville Massachusetts. She is interested in majoring in communications and photography. Gretchen is a life guard during the summer at Wildwood Beaches. She enjoys skiing and often travels to Utah to visit her brothers. Gretchen also enjoys traveling and has been to Africa, Costa Rica, Panama, South East Asia, China, and all throughout Europe. She became interested in photography at a young age and soon became the photographer for her elementary school newspaper. Gretchen was also the yearbook editor for her high school. In the future she would love to work as a photographer for a skiing magazine, shooting not only skiers but beautiful snowy landscapes as well. Her incredible interest and experience in photography will make her a valuable member of this class!

Madeleine Drouin

Madeleine Drouin is a sophomore at Hobart and William Smith Colleges studying Economics as a major, with a double minor in Studio Art and Media & Society. Madeleine has had some experience in the darkroom, taking two summers of photography classes. She is a member of the William Smith Squash team, and is also a member of the Arts Collective. She is from Wellesley, Massachusetts, and has lived there for 16 years, so she is a die-hard Red Sox fan. She really enjoys spending time in Boston and Cambridge, exploring the cities. She has a younger brother, and a dog, a rambunctious golden retriever named Casey. When she graduates, she hopes to find a job in Boston in advertising.

Molly Fitzgerald

Molly is from Sudbury, Mass. Molly went to high school in Maine at Gould Academy, while in Maine she likes to ski and ice fish. She recently went abroad and it was the greatest experience of her life. She can speak Vietnams now. One of Molly’s favorite things to do is travel. Molly plays lacrosse at William Smith and green is her favorite color (not because of William Smith). In the summers she spends her time in Cape Cod and her favorite thing to do is swim in waves in the ocean. She also likes to fish and jump off bridges. Molly is an art history and Asian studies majors.

 

   

Jacob Harrington

Jake is a junior at Hobart from Corning, New York. He is majoring in Architecture and Economics. He works in a telecommunications laboratory when he is away from school. He has played the piano in Las Vegas, Washington D.C., and at the Belhurst here in Geneva. He has a younger sister that is a freshman in high school. He is an avid cyclist, on both mountain and road terrain. He is now looking at MBA programs at Cornell, University of Rochester, and University of Toronto. A hobby of his is metal working and custom fabrication, where he makes street rods, motor cycles etc. He tends to rock a nice moustache, and is already looking forward to the upcoming summer break.

Kathleen Henke

Kate is a nineteen-year-old sophomore who hails from Rhinebeck, New York. Rhinebeck is a small town in the Hudson Valley with only one traffic light. She is a media and society major and is minoring in art history. Kate is a member of the Heron Crew Team. Last year she was a coxswain and is rowing this year. She has three younger brothers. The oldest is Pat who is 18, Tim is 16, and Paul is 13. Her favorite TV show is Entourage. Kate doesn’t have a favorite movie but really likes You’ve Got Mail. Her favorite book is The Secret Life of Bees. During her summers, she works as a lifeguard on Cape Cod. Surprisingly, she doesn’t like to swim. Kate just got a puppy named McDuff. Kate enjoys skiing when she gets the chance and has fallen off the chairlift a couple of times. She was a musical exchange student in Germany where she played the flute. Kate hopes to join the Peace Corps some day because she likes to travel. Her favorite trip was to Paris.

Michael Hess

Mike is from Cleveland, Ohio. He is a public policy major and lives in Durfee at Hobart. Crew is a passion of Mike’s and he rows for Hobart. Mike has a brother named Andrew who goes to Xavier University. In the summer Mike is an avid golfer and in the winter he loves to ski at Bristol when at school. Winter is his favorite season because he loves cold weather. He does not have any pets, but he loves the movie Boondock Saints. He hopes to travel abroad senior year to Ireland, because he is half Irish. Although, he is part Irish, he stays away from green and chooses blue as his favorite color.

Christopher Jenco

Christopher is a sophomore at Hobart from Naperville, Illinois. He is a Media and Society major and minoring in either English or American Studies. He took a year off last year and spent the year as a ski instructor in Vail, Colorado. He is currently interning at the Rochester Americans in the Marketing division. He is a lifelong sports fanatic and likes to play rugby. Throughout his lifetime, he has played almost every sport. He has a brother who is currently a freshman at Xavier in Cincinnati. He decided to take Intro to Imaging because he has had a great deal of experience in the dark room aspect of photography and wanted to learn about the digital side of photography. Ted Aub is his first cousin once removed, a little known fact on the HWS campus. And today is his twenty-first birthday. Someday, he would like to return to Colorado and ski for the rest of his life.

Sara McMenimen

Sara McMenimen is 19 years old and a sophomore. She is a media and society major with an english minor. She is from Marblehead MA, and enjoys skiing and playing tennis. In high school she was a three sport athlete, but she doesn't participate in any of them anymore. She has broken all five fingers in her left hand, which was painful. She is an only child and owns a cat. She is interested in journalism or marketing, she hasn't decided yet. Her ancestors came over on the Mayflower. She thinks she is going to Egypt over the summer through the school. She worked at a Yacht club over the summer of ‘08 in her town, it is one of the oldest in the country, and she works as a tour guide on campus. Dave Matthews is her favorite band. Some things she can’t stand are people who are loud eaters, and when people borrow her stuff without asking. She wants to study abroad in Hong Kong next fall. She is an officer in the media club here on campus. Her favorite T.V. shows are Wife Swap, Man vs. Wild, and Deadliest Catch.

Alexandra Ruppel

Ally Ruppel is from Greenwich, Connecticut. She went to Sacred Heart for middle school and high school. Ally is an art history major. She spends her summers in Martha’s Vineyard. She enjoys sailing and tennis. In the winter she likes to ski at Stratton. Ally has a brother who is fifteen years old and goes to Brunswick. Her favorite color is orange. Ally was born and spent part of her early life in Manhattan. She likes to go to museums. Ally had a fish named Sammy, who lived to the age of seven years. That is quite a long time for a fish.

MaryEllen Toscani

Mary Ellen is a sophomore from Berwyn, Pennsylvania. She plays defense on the HWS field hockey team and also enjoys volunteer firefighting in her free time. During her down time in the summer, she works as a camp counselor at Future Stars Day Camps. In the winter, she enjoys snowboarding at Breckenridge Colorado. Her interest in Photography began in high school and now she takes her camera with her wherever she goes! She is always looking for a new experience and new challenge. In the future she hopes to be working for 3601 Creative Group designing different types of media and merchandise for the Philadelphia Flyers. At HWS, Mary Ellen plans to major in Media in Society and a possible minor in English and Philosophy. There is no doubt that Mary Ellen will bring an array of surprises and excitement to this class!

Karilynn Williamson

Sophomore at William Smith. She is from Darien Connecticut. She is majoring in English with a Media and Society minor. As one of the house managers of the Greens House, she has a strong interest in the environment. Her brother currently is working in Toyota’s engineering training program in Newark California. She works through the summer in technical theatre, building stage sets, constructing costumes, and hanging lights. She’s looking to get a buying internship this summer in fashion. Her great great great grandfather, Charles Evans Hughes, ran for president against Woodrow Wilson, and lost, but then went on to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She’s an avid member of Campus Greens, HWS votes, Hillel, Phoenix Players. And if she ever needs a job, Mark Froehlich keeps a position open in his theatre backdrop company, J Galt Designs.
