Congrats on your match! Quite simply, this program is awesome. Really, and you can believe us when we say it--they pay us to play poker and go bowling, not just to say things like that. The program has likely already contacted you about moving here and working in Rochester, but our version focuses instead on living in Rochester, which we excel at.
If you’re not from around here, your first priority was probably to check a US map to see “exactly just where am I going to be living for four years?!” Rochester’s a bit like Tulsa or Timbuktu, places you’ve heard of, but couldn’t find on a map if your life depended on it, but by now you’ve got that part down, so let’s get to the good stuff.
Perhaps the most important thing you’ll find here is a list of several residents, many of whom have offered to house you while you’re in town searching for a place of your own. Don’t get a hotel, there are plenty of good, free bed and breakfasts at the homes of friends you don’t even know yet.
If you are moving here with someone, spouse, significant other, whatever have you, this is probably a good time to tell them that they should sign up for an account on our message board and calendar, at www.ordinarygentlemen.org. The League of Ordinary Gentlemen is a group for resident spouses that plays poker, goes bowling, plays fantasy football, eats like kings, and in general makes our work-related “alone time” much more enjoyable. Tell your companion to sign up right away, we’ve been looking forward to meeting them for months. If you come alone, we hope our info will be of assistance and we actually do throw events for everyone and hope to see you at one of those.
Believe it or not, we’ve got sponsors for our group. The U of R contributed enough to get us started, and we squeezed a bit out of our most commonly used real estate agent (Andy Philippone) and home mortgage consultant (Mike Monile), who also got Wells Fargo to donate the books sent with the packet that was mailed out.
The material in the packet and on this site is our take on moving to Rochester, a compilation of info we wish that we had when we moved here, so we hope you’ll find it useful. We’re working on a more comprehensive document about living in the area as well, which you’ll receive on a later date. Until then, kiss med school goodbye and think fondly of your future with us here in Rochester. Residency awaits!
Welcome,
The League of Ordinary Gentlemen
