Below is a collection of remarks from debaters and judges who have attended the Round Robin in the past, which will hopefully provide you with a sense of what we are trying to accomplish at the RR. |

The RR is likely the most consistently competitive BP tournament in the world. Eric and his team put together a fantastic programme and the fact that so many travel so far each year to participate in it, is a testament to their contribution to global debate. -- Fanele Mashwama (Harvard; World Champion and Worlds CA) |
The HWS RR is easily one of the most challenging, exciting and fun debating competitions anywhere on the circuit. The congregation of so many national and continental champions made it one of the more difficult tournaments I have attended, yet the warmth and hospitality made the experience delightful and rather memorable. I hope the tournament continues to remain the pinnacle of debating excellence for many generations to come! -- Aditya Mitra (Nanyang; Worlds Quarterfinalist) |
It's impossible to sound genuine when you're praising literally every aspect of a competition. The Round Robin was the place where I first felt valued in competitive debate, where I met the women role models that motivated me and got me through this activity, and where I felt truly cared for by every single person involved. I have had these feelings at other tournaments, but never all at once, and never for three years in a row. -- Aislin Flynn (Hart House; Canadian National Champion) |
The HWS Round Robin was my favorite tournament from the very first time I attended because of the closeness and hospitality it paired with intense competitive debating. -- Alexandra Sundarsingh (Hart House; Yale IV Champion) |
The HWS Round Robin is one of the most well respected and beloved events on the international debating calendar. It is utterly unique among all major debating tournaments. No other tournament uses a round robin format, deploys two judge panels per debate, or goes to such lengths to set fascinating and unexplored motions. Debaters are notoriously wary of tournament innovations, but it's a great testament to how well thought-out the HWS RR is that I have only heard of its novelties spoken about with admiration. I cannot think of any competition that comes close to offering the RR's incredible combination of innovation, world-class teams, superb judging, and unparalleled hospitality. -- Ashish Kumar (Cambridge; Worlds Top Speaker and CA) |
As someone who took part in many international debating events over the past few years, I can say I will definitely remember my participation at the HWS RR as one of the highlights of my debating career. The tournament was not only superbly well-organized and had fascinating debates, but also provided an excellent opportunity for in-depth exchange of ideas with people from around the world that may well not have been possible without it. -- Ayal Haut-Man (Tel Aviv; Worlds Top Breaking Team and Second Speaker) |
I have the dubious distinction of having lost the Round Robin final round, not once, but twice. In spite of that, some of my happiest debating memories are at the RR. It is a tournament like no other, pitting top notch teams against each other in every debate, and the hospitality shown to every debater was outstanding. -- Ben Woolgar (Oxford; Worlds Finalist and Top Speaker) |
The HWS Round Robin has made Geneva, NY into the Wimbledon, UK of collegiate debate. This seems to me no small feat and a testament to the extraordinary generosity this university has shown to our community. We are all very grateful for it. -- Bo Seo (Harvard; World Champion) |
The HWS Round Robin is a truly unique and special opportunity for the world's debaters to engage with a select but diverse group of exceptional speakers and judges. I enjoyed the pure debating experience that the RR offered -- focused on ideas and intellectual rigor -- rising above the hyper-competitive, win-at-all-costs varsity circuits. The event is also a fantastic social occasion to meet like-minded people from around the world and hear all manner of exciting and interesting ideas. -- Chris Bisset (Sydney; Worlds Finalist) |
Without a shadow of a doubt, the Round Robin is the most fun and challenging international tournament. The amount of work and effort put into the tournament are apparent and helps pushing the bar higher. -- Dan Lahav (Tel Aviv; Worlds Top Speaker and DCA) |
Ever since I attended my first Worlds and learned about the Round Robin at HWS, it has been a special tournament for me: creating a space for the best debaters across language categories to meet and battle it out, while at the same time being defined by an atmosphere of kindness and fun. That was my experience at the RR. It was a pleasure and a privilege to attend. -- Dessislava Kirova (Berlin; Worlds ESL Champion) |
I had the privilege of attending the HWS Round Robin as a debater, a judge, and as the Chief Adjudicator. The HWS Round Robin has succeeded in doing what a number of tournaments have attempted unsuccessfully to do, to bring the world's best debate teams to the same place at the same time in a veritable tournament of champions. Other major international debating tournaments can justly boast that they attract top talent from across their home continent, but they cannot claim to bring together the best teams from Asia, Europe, Oceania, and Africa with the same consistency as the Round Robin. -- Douglas Cochran (Cambridge; Worlds Semifinalist and CA) |
Attending the HWS Round Robin, both as a judge and as a competitor, has been one of the highlights of my college experience. I never fail to be blown away by the creativity and intellectual rigor of the arguments advanced by speakers in each and every round at the tournament. In addition, the tournament socials and banquets provide unique opportunities to meet and make friends with individuals from all around the world. The impeccable organization and the unfailing friendliness of the HWS students at the RR also make the tournament one to remember! -- EnTing Lee (Cornell; Worlds Equity Officer and Round Robin Finalist) |
I had an amazing time at the RR. The debates were cracking, and I had the privilege of enjoying some incredibly fun debates against some of the most phenomenal speakers I've ever encountered. We were also heavily pampered - the meals were great and so was the hotel. Most importantly, I had a wonderful time with amazing friends, both during and outside of the debates. That trip to Geneva in April last year is one that I'll remember for a long time to come. -- Etsuko Lim (Cambridge; Worlds Quarterfinalist) |
I have probably attended fifty university debating competitions, on three continents, but the HWS Round Robin is the only one I would call unique. It strikes the perfect balance between so many things: hospitality and challenge, intimate size and tough competition, new faces and old friends. For British debaters like me, a trip to the far side of the world is seldom so worthwhile. -- George Clay (Cambridge; Worlds Quarterfinalist) |
The Round Robin was one of the best competitions I have ever attended during my 3 years long debating career. It was extremely well run, with high quality food, amazing judges and top-notch socials. I particularly loved the environment, one which made me feel like everything was oriented towards participants and ensuring everyone remembers this tournament as an amazing experience. -- Helena Ivanov (Belgrade; Worlds Semifinalist) |
I've crossed tl1e Atlantic to attend the Round Robin three times. It is among the best organized tournaments that I've ever been to, perhaps the most competitive, and certainly the most fun. The HWS Round Robin has become an important fixture in the world debating calendar, and I'm overjoyed that I've had the chance to be part of the competition's wonderful history. -- Harish Natarajan (Cambridge; Worlds Finalist and CA) |
The Round Robin is the best debate tournament in the world. Since I began competitive debate as a loud 17-year-old, the RR has occupied hallowed territory as the ultimate tournament of tournaments, with judging to match. Rounds from the RR are of a higher standard than essentially any other, and deserve all the YouTube attention they garner from the debate community. HWS does an outstanding job every year of putting the world's best teams and judges in one place. -- Harry Elliott (Stanford; Worlds Finalist) |
The HWS Round Robin is not only one of the most competitive tournaments out there, but also one that allows debaters the rare opportunity to go head to head against the best of the best from around the globe. It celebrates inclusivity as well as competitiveness. -- Jasmine Ho (UT MARA; Worlds Semifinalist) |
The HWS Round Robin has become one of the most familiar, distinctive, and essential tournaments in the global debating calendar, all thanks to the efforts of the fantastic team at HWS. -- Jonathan Leader Maynard (Oxford; Worlds Finalist and CA) |
Intercollegiate debate is at its best when there is a guarantee of fairness, respect, and intellectual excellence, and after more than a decade of universally excellent tournaments, HWS continues to raise the bar for the whole debating community. -- Jon Haderlein (Chicago, North American Champion) |
The Round Robin is where top debaters from all around the world get to know each other. People often ask me how debaters from North America, Europe, and Australia all seem to be friends. The Round Robin is a big part of the answer. -- Josh Zoffer (Harvard; World Champion) |
The HWS Round Robin is, without a doubt, the best debate tournament I have ever attended. It was a privilege to have been part of this truly world class event. -- Kenneth Kang (NUS; Asian Champion) |
The HWS Round Robin is an exceptional tournament that I was privileged to travel halfway around the world, from New Zealand, to attend. Exciting motions with some of the highest standards of debate and adjudication I have experienced. Most importantly, however, it provided an intimate environment to form friendships with fascinating people from around the world. -- Kieran Bunn (Otago; Worlds Finalist) |
Over the last years, it was wonderiul to see the HWS Round Robin go from strength to strength whilst preserving its inclusive, international character. It's a hard balance to strike and the people at HWS who managed to maintain that balance are right to celebrate it. The hospitality was just fantastic and I know the tournament has and will always hold a special place on the global debate calendar. -- Leela Koenig (Leiden; ESL World Champion) |
The HWS RR was groundbreaking, and to this day remains an incredible and unique event. I have admired many of its wonderful innovations and solutions. You've set a standard for innovative debate competition, education and camaraderie that remains to be beat. -- Logan Balavijendran (Chung Ang; Twice Worlds CA) |
Of all the debate competitions I've attended (a number higher than I care to admit), the HWS Round Robin stands out for its excellence and its consistency. Each year seemed to pair a new (and ever-more-impressive) set of competitors and judges with the same outstanding execution. -- Michael Baer (Stanford; Worlds Finalist and CA) |
In any given year, the HWS Round Robin will give rise to some of the very best debating anywhere in the world. For participants, competing is a uniquely enjoyable and edifying experience. The debates at the Round Robin serve as a potent reminder of the very best that debating can be, and as an inspiration to debaters past, present and future. -- Michael Dunn Goekjian (Cambridge; Worlds Top Speaker, Finalist, DCA and CA) |
The intimate setting of the Round Robin allowed us to interact with debaters from different countries, education, and backgrounds, and I thoroughly enjoyed being exposed to this new community. -- Ratib Ali (BRAC; ESL World Champion) |
The HWS Round Robin is considered by many, the de-facto Intercontinental University Debate Championship, where an assortment of 16 continental champions, and regional debate heavyweights square off against each other. While one would expect this to yield a hyper-competitive race to the top (and the quality of the debate rounds did indeed reflect the exclusiveness of the tournament's selection process) it was refreshing to observe that the participants at the tournament, including myself, were less eager to obsess over scores and results, than they were to join in this celebration of debating with their counterparts from around the world. -- Ritvik "Bucky" Chauhan (IIT Bombay; Worlds Octofinalist) |
The Round Robin is a high point in the debating community's calendar. Just the other day, two former debate partners now living on different continents were reminiscing about past adventures. They took solace with the words, "I'll see you at HWS." -- Shengwu Li (Oxford; Worlds Top speaker and Finalist) |
The Round Robin is a debate laboratory of sorts, where the world's best debaters produce arguments that go viral internationally. It is also a site of interesting judging experiments and innovations which have yielded data that challenged dominant ways of thinking about judging. It has become the global gold standard for judging quality and tournament organization. -- Sharmila Parmanand (Ateneo; CA of Berlin Worlds) |
Debating at the HWS RR was one of the greatest privileges as a debater. This tournament has assumed the position of an annual pilgrimage undertaken by the very best of minds from across the globe. -- Souradip Sen (IIT Bombay; Worlds Octofinalist) |
Never has an event so lived up to the hype. The HWS Round Robin is everything right with debate. Eric Barnes, thank you for this incredible gift to the community. Your passion is infectious, execution flawless, and hospitality unmatched. Thanks to everyone at HWS for making it possible. -- Taylor Blackburn (Bates; US National Champion) |
Every spring, HWS plays host to one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world, the Round Robin. Featuring top debaters from North America, Europe, Asia and Africa, the Round Robin remains the tournament I remember most fondly from my six years of university debating. No other competition I attended (including the World Championships) provided the quality of debating, hospitality and organization I had the privilege of enjoying at HWS every April. -- Veenu Goswami (Hart House; Worlds Finalist and DCA) |
The HWS Round Robin was one of the best tournaments I have attended. From the organization, to the debates, the judging, and the socials, every aspect was excellent. -- Xiao Hongyu (NUS; Asian Champion) |

I found the RR to be both the friendliest and most competitive International tournament, which is quite a feat. That it manages to be all that while being a proving ground for research and innovation is something else. -- Yarn Shih (Nanyang; Worlds Quarterfinalist) |

The HWS Round Robin goes out of its way to find a truly diverse group of bright students and bring them together in a forum where they actually have to interact meaningfully. Diversity of thought has never been more important, and HWS gave me the opportunity to challenge my beliefs and assumptions in a way that no other venue has since. -- Monica Ferris (Hart House; Chair of Worlds Council) |

HWS has been a crossroads between otherwise isolated debating circuits, and the Round Robin has been a global marketplace for trade in ideas, perspectives, and friendships.
